Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Law Minister Anisul Haq explained the government’s stance on Sunday during a briefing at the State Guest house ‘Padma’.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque were also present.
In the meeting, the recent political development, including the verdict of Aug 21 grenade attack, was also discussed.
In response to concern from the diplomatic community about the Digital Security Act, Law Minister Huq assured them it was an ongoing process and there is always room for change.
Meanwhile, in the last month the heads of mission of the EU member states, the European Union Delegation and the heads of mission of Norway and Switzerland issued a statement expressing their concern about the Digital Security Act.
Meanwhile, a press release of the foreign ministry said the diplomats were explained why such law is necessary to ensure public safety and order.
“Law Minister referred to the concerns raised by certain members of diplomatic corps and informed that the law has been finalized after intensive consultations with the editors’ council and journalist groups as well as diplomats,” the statement said.
On Oct 8, President Abdul Hamid gave his assent to the new law that media groups fear could cripple press freedom and curb free speech.
Parliament passed the Digital Security Act on Sept 19, combining the colonial-era Official Secrets Act with tough new provisions such as arrests without a warrant.
