Khaleda Zia (Photo: Nashirul Islam)The High Court has extended BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s bail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case until Oct 15.
Justices M Enayetur Rahim and Md. Mostafizur Rahman gave the order on Wednesday (Oct 10) after hearing the plea for acquittal.
The same bench has been hearing the plea of acquittal filed by Khaleda Zia, challenging the lower court verdict that sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment for her involvement in embezzling foreign donations made to Zia Orphanage Trust.
Three more pleas in the same case are awaiting judgment— a revised plea by Anti-Corruption Commission to extend Khaleda’s sentence and two other pleas for acquittal, filed by convicts Qazi Saleemul Huq alias Qazi Kamal and Sharfuddin Ahmed.
Khaleda, a three-time premier, has been serving a five-year term at the old jailhouse in the capital’s Nazimuddin Road since Feb 8.
As of Oct 6, she has been moved to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital and undergoing treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
