Children of freedom fighters block Shahbagh againThe children of freedom fighters have once again blocked the Shahbagh intersection to protest the complete cancellation of the quota system in first and second-grade government jobs.
They have blocked the roads since 6 pm on Monday (Oct 8) demanding the restoration of 30 per cent Freedom Fighter’s quota.
Another organization under the banner of ‘Amra Muktijoddhar Shontan’ led a protest rally at Shahbagh at 5 pm demanding the prime minister’s intervention in the matter.
The protest will continue until these demands are met, said it’s chairman.
Students and job-seekers have been demonstrating demanding reforms to quotas in civil service and the protests peaked in April this year, when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in Parliament that the entire system will scrapped.
The government later formed a seven-member committee led by Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam to review quotas, which on Sept 17 recommended the abolishment of quotas in first and second class government jobs.
The Cabinet approved the proposal on Wednesday (Oct 3) amidst criticisms from the children of the freedom fighters who have taken to the streets immediately after the announcement.
The government issued a gazette notification Thursday (Oct 4), saying that the abolishment will be effective immediately.
