A day after the Cabinet endorsed a high-level panel’s recommendation to abolish quotas in first and second class jobs in public service, the government issued the official order.
In a gazette notification published on Thursday, the ministry of public administration said it will be effective immediately.

According the gazette, recruitment for first and second class government jobs will be based solely on merit.

Students and job-seekers have been demonstrating demanding reforms to quotas in civil service and the protests peaked in April this year, when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in Parliament that the entire system will scrapped.

The government later formed a seven-member committee led by Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam to review quotas, which on Sept 17 recommended the abolishment of quotas in first and second class government jobs.

The Cabinet approved the proposal on Wednesday (Oct 3) amidst criticisms from the children of the freedom fighters who have taken to the streets immediately after the announcement.
