Pro-quota protests at Shahbagh; roads blocked

Protesters led by Muktijoddhar Sontan Command, an organisation of freedom fighters’ children, blocked the Shahbagh intersection in the capital on Wednesday night after the cabinet abolished quotas in first and second class jobs in the civil service. PHOTO: Nashirul IslamThe Muktijoddha Sangsad Sontan Command has declared non-stop programmes at the Shahbagh intersection to protest complete cancellation of the quota system in government jobs. They have also called a grand rally on Saturday afternoon. The movement began on Wednesday with a large number of protesters congregating near the Shahbagh intersection.

As a result, traffic movement was hampered and cars could not enter the Dhaka University campus.

On Wednesday, the cabinet recommended the complete revocation of the quota system for first and second class government jobs.

To protest this, a movement started under the Muktijoddha Sangsad Sontan Command.

Children of freedom fighters staged a protest at the Shahbagh intersection demanding reinstatement of 30 percent freedom fighters’ quota along with a six-point demand.
