Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader. FILE PHOTOResponding to the BNP and other opposition parties’ demand for a non-partisan polls-time administration, senior Awami League leader Obaidul Quader has said the current situation does not call for it.
The authority of the polls-time government will be limited and it will not be involved in issues related with the election, he told the media on Sunday (Sept 30).
“What exactly are the circumstances in the country that warrants a special government?” asked the general secretary of the ruling party.
The schedules for the polls are expected to be announced in the first week of November, he said before adding, the demand for a neutral administration with only a month to go was unreasonable.
“They should demand for a neutral election commission, not a neutral government.”
He said that a neutral polls-time government will require amending the Constitution, which is not an option. “Bangladesh is not in turmoil. But the BNP and their allies are inciting unrest.”
On BNP taking part in the election, Quader said that political parties do not need an invitation for contesting in the polls. “It’s their democratic right. Why are they considering it as a favour?”
