Four cases have been started over violence on the Dhaka University campus, including the attack on vice-chancellor’s residence amid demonstrations by students and job-seekers demanding reforms to quotas in public service.
The cases have been filed with the Shahbagh Police Station late on Tuesday.
Dhaka University’s chief security officer started the case on the attack on Vice-Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman’s residence, said Inspector Abul Hasan Zafar of Shahbagh police.
One of the three others cases have been filed by a Special Branch personnel while the rest by the Shahbagh police, he said.
The cases accuse unidentified people.
Sources in police said that the Detective Branch has already launched investigations in to the attack on the VC’s residence.
They have been collecting footages captured by CCTV cameras in the area while efforts are on to recover data from damaged security cameras inside the premises.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has said their forces will not enter the campus unless the university authorities call them in.
However, protesters will be stopped from demonstrating at the key intersection of Shahbagh.
“We have no problems with protests on the campus, but demonstrations leaving the people to suffer will not be allowed,” a senior DMP officer told Bangla Tribune.
Amid clashes between police and demonstrators on the campus, a group of people barged in to the vice-chancellor’s residence early on Monday, before vandalising furniture and home appliances. They also set fire and damaged vehicles parked inside the premises.
The vice-chancellor and his family members, however, were unharmed.
Soon after the attack, Akhtaruzzaman told the media that it was an attempt on his life.
