Delhi will extend its full support to Dhaka over the Rohingya crisis, says visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Ghokale.
“Bangladesh’s measures for the people displace from Rakhine is commendable. India will fully support Bangladesh government’s initiatives for their peaceful repatriation,” he told the media on Monday after talks with Bangladesh Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque.
“We had provided relief assistance for the refugees in the first phase. We are going for a second round of assistance,” said Gokhale adding that India is building pre-fabricated houses in Myanmar’s Rakhine.
In a clear reference to the Teesta water sharing issue, he said, “Some issues between India and Bangladesh are yet to be resolved. We assure you we are working hard internally to resolve the issues.”
Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Haque said Monday’s talks included several aspects, including the Rohingya crisis and Teesta water-sharing.
“I am very happy to say that India reiterated their commitment and that they are looking into resolving this issue as soon as possible,” he said after the meeting at state guesthouse Padma on Monday.
Six MoUs were signed following the meeting on inaugurating an Urdu Chair at the Dhaka University, an inter-state diesel pipeline, installing computer labs in 500 schools, developing the Rangpur City Corporation and on expanding services of state broadcaster Bangladesh Betar.
