Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressing the parliament on Thursday. PIDLeader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina says there’s no reason to be concerned over the Digital Security Act as it will not muzzle press freedom.
“Why are the journalists getting sensitive and worried? What’s the reason? I think there’s no logic behind it,” she said in her valedictory speech of the 22nd session of the 10th parliament on Thursday.
Hasina said that the interest of a particular group should not be considered in this matter.
She said the government must provide security to people and protect the society, families and people’s character so that children and young generation do not take the wrong path and the adults do not get addicted.
“What we’ve done is for the wellbeing of the country, the nation and the children,” said the prime minister.
She said several eminent editors, journalist and representatives of the civil society have voiced their opinions against the law. “They’re only concerned about whether their voice is gagged. But that’s not the case.”
She said that the freedom of press was muzzled and journalists were intimidated during the 2011-6 BNP-Jamaat alliance regime.
“And which other government, except for the Awami League, dared for privatisation TV channels and radio stations?” she asked.
The journalism profession should be constructive and responsible, said Hasina before adding: “Press freedom is not for disturbing social harmony or damaging the country’s image.”
The Awami League regime has built a Digital Bangladesh, she said.
“And we want the people to enjoy its benefit and the Digital Security Act Bill has been passed in the parliament to ensure security of the children, youths and students,” added the prime minister.
