Excessive rainfalls, overflow of water and water from hills have flooded the country's half of the districts this year. 82 lakhs 17 thousands 432 people have been affected in these districts and the crop of the affected land area is 6, 6, 955 hectares in total. The latest report on 5 September from the National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC), under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, has revealed the information.
The affected districts are Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Rangamati, Brahmanbaria, Faridpur, Rajbari, Jessore, Mymensingh, Tangail, Sylhet, Sherpur, Moulvibazar, Naogaon, Dhaka, Comilla, Rangpur, Manikganj, Joypurhat, Munshiganj, Madaripur, Natore and Chandpur.According to the NDRCC report, the number of upazilas, unions, municipalities, and villages among the 32 districts affected by floods; the number of people and households affected in the districts; the damaged roads considering all these, the number of highly affected districts is 10. These are Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur, Naogaon, Natore, Joypurhat, Jamalpur and Gaibandha. Moderate damage has occurred in 17 districts and fewer losses in the remaining 5 districts. In 17 districts there is the medium level of damage and the other 5 districts being damaged less.
According to the NDRC report, the flood situation in the districts has improved due to the decrease of water level in the river Padma and the lack of low rainfall. So far the water is flowing below the danger level of 28 districts among 32 districts. It results, the improvement of the overall flood situation. However, river erosion is still continuing in Shariatpur and Chandpur districts.It has been reported that total 45 people died due to floods this year. 85 religious and educational institutions have been completely damaged and 4,735 education and religious institutions have partial damaged. Total 208 Upazilas and 65 municipalities have been affected by floods.
According to Ministry sources, 27 thousand 2 hundred metric tons of rice has been allocated for flood victims of 32 districts. It has distributed 17 thousand 394 metric tons of rice. 9,813 metric tons of rice is now being stored for these districts. Apart from this, 69 thousand 120 packets of dry food have been distributed from 71 thousand 260 packets in these districts. The rest packets are stored.Deputy Secretary of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry GM Abdul Kader told the Bangla Tribune that 145 people died in 32 districts so far in the flood affected people. Meanwhile, the standing committee meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture held in Parliament informed that due to excessive rainfalls and floods in the country in recent time, the crops were damaged severely. The Department of Agricultural Extension has taken an initiative to identify the amount of damage. In the meeting, detailed discussions were also taken to assess the losses of the farmers in the recent flood and the measures taken by the ministry.
A meeting of the National Disaster Management Council was held in the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday (September 4th). In the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "The government is ready to face the natural disaster. If the preparation for the disaster is good, then the amount of damage can be reduced.’ The Prime Minister added that the government was prepared for the disaster and nobody died for food because of it. Along with all the offices of the government, Awami League activists have worked sincerely, thus it has been possible to reach the people with food, necessary medicines and relief materials in time.
In the meeting, the Prime Minister said the government is importing food for food security. Although flooding caused damage to houses and crops, it brought suffering to farmers, but it also brings silt, which increases the fertility of the land.
