Smoke is seen on the Myanmar border as Rohingya refugees walk on the shore after crossing the Bangladesh-Myanmar border by boat through the Bay of Bengal, in Shah Porir Dwip, Bangladesh September 11, 2017. REUTERSRepatriation of the first batch of Rohingyas will begin soon, says Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.
"The first batch of more than 3,000 Rohingyas has been cleared. We expect to repatriate them soon, but I can’t tell you a specific date at this moment,” he told the media after on Wednesday after a seminar at the National Defence College (NDC) in Dhaka.
Ali, however, could not provide any further details on the repatriation process, but said that they have “increased engagement with Myanmar.”
Bangladesh now hosts more than 1 million Rohingyas.
About 700,000 Rohingya Muslims, according to UN estimates, fled from Buddhist-majority Myanmar to Bangladesh after a military crackdown in August 2017 that the United Nations has called ethnic cleansing.
Refugees have reported killings, rape and arson on a large scale, but Myanmar has denied nearly all of the accusations, saying it waged a legitimate counter-insurgency operation after coming under attack from Rohingya militants.
