After seven government colleges came under Dhaka University last year, students from these institutions will, for the first time, take part in the 51st convocation to be held this year. After these institutions were brought under the DU umbrella, their Honours and Masters results were published. However, only the Honours passing students of 2015 will be allowed to take part in the convocation, leaving out the Masters students of 2014.
This has triggered grievance among many students because they feel deprived. Meanwhile, DU administration has said: “no one will be deprived; they will be able to take part next year.”
Students of seven colleges have also been asked to take part in convocation from their own college campus through video conference.
Masters graduate students of Dhaka College and Eden College sounded indignant: “Dhaka University gave a notice, saying that Honours students for 2015 will be allowed to apply, excluding us.”
An Eden Mohila (Women's) College student of the department of history, Tasnima Yasmin, told Bangla Tribune: “I am a Masters examinee of 2014 but wasn’t called for the convocation.”
When asked why Masters students of seven colleges will not be able to take part in the convocation, dean of the commerce faculty, Dr Shibli Rubayetul Islam, told Bangla Tribune: “since seven colleges have been included, a large number of students are waiting to take part in the convocation; around 22 thousand students will be at the convocation being held after one and a half years.”
Maybe due to the grand scale and number of students, certain batches have not been included this year, he commented and assured: “no one will be deprived, those who will miss this year may be called the next time.”
Meanwhile, DU Vice Chancellor said: “we cannot accommodate so many students on one field; therefore, they have been asked to join from their own college campus via video conference.”
