Amid speculations and apprehension from different quarters over the next general election, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that she was confident that the polls will be held in time.
“No one can stop the election if the people are with us and there’s no doubt that it will be a free, fair and credible one,” she said while addressing a press conference on Sunday.
The media call at the PM’s official residence Ganabhaban was meant to brief over her Nepal visit on Aug 30 and 31 when she attended the BIMSTEC summit.
Responding to a query from the members of the media, Hasina said she has her faith in the people of Bangladesh.
“I have no personal desire. If the people want development, then they will vote for boat (Awami League’s polls symbol) and elect us for another term,” she said. “I have worked for the people while being in office. If the people chose us, then fine, nothing to do if they don’t.”
On Gano Forum chief Kamal Hossain and Jukto Front chief Badruddoza Chowdhury forming a coalition, Awami League President Hasina said, “We welcome the initiative and they should forge a unity and take part in the election.”
On Kamal Hossain’s doubt on the polls being held, Hasina said, “Dr Kamal Hossain should be asked whether they want an election at all ... If he comes up with heated statements, then it should be assumed that his plane is ready.”
