Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina speaks at a media briefing at her official Ganabhaban residence on Sunday (Sept 2). PHOTO/FOCUS BANGLAPrime Minister and ruling Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina has made it clear during her Sunday’s media call that there’s no possibility of opening talks with the BNP.
“They did not even let me enter when I went after the death of (BNP chief) Khaleda Zia’s son. It’s then when I decided that I will never join in any talks with them,” she told a press conference on Sunday at her official residence Ganabhaban.
The media call was meant to brief on the prime minister’s Nepal visit on Aug 30 and 31, when she attended the BIMSTEC summit.
Responding to a query, the prime minister said that any kind of talks with the BNP was “out of the question”.
Referring to Khaleda’s conviction for graft, Hasina said, “The BNP boasts so many eminent lawyers ... and they failed to prove her innocent? Why blame us. Their leader is jailed and where’s a movement for it. Let them wage a movement.”
On the BNP’s call to not take part in the polls, the Awami League president said, “It’s their call; we have nothing to do with it. If the BNP thinks they’ll not contest in the polls, then fine.”
