Police officials all over the country have been ordered to be stern in implementing laws. Such a message was passed on to officials by IGP, Jabed Patwary, in a meeting, at the police headquarters with senior officers of different ranges.
Strict orders have been given to ensure that CNGs, auto-rickshaws, easy-bikes, Nasimon, Karimon – all motorized three wheelers are kept off the highways.
After the student protest demanding safe roads, the police and the roads, transport and bridges ministry are unitedly working to make people aware and, implement the regulations.
In recent meetings, held at the police headquarters, a decision was taken that no leniency will be shown if proper documents and valid licence cannot be produced.
Sylhet range DIG, Kamrul Hassan, told Bangla Tribune: “we are working to raise awareness among road users; decisions have been taken to have more zebra crossings; also, speed guns are being used to monitor vehicle movement.”
If a car goes beyond the permitted speed limit, cases are being handed out immediately, he assured.
Meanwhile, traffic police officers are going to different schools to talk about traffic rules.
Highway range DIG, Atiqul Islam, told Bangla Tribune: “the main important thing is ensuring awareness among people. If someone is careful in following road regulations, accident numbers will fall.”
Instead of flimsy motorized three wheelers on highways, buses for short distances can be introduced, he suggested.
“Most accidents on highways involve small motorized passenger vehicles with around 25 per cent mishaps happening due to ignorance about traffic laws.”
On 20 August last, letters were sent from primary and mass education ministry for taking necessary steps to create public awareness about road safety.
It’s believed that efforts to sensitise parents through children in primary schools will be more effective.
