As many as 259 people were killed and some 960 injured in 237 road accidents during this year’s Eid journeys across the country, a survey report says.
The fatalities were caused in 13 days before and after the Eid-ul-Azha.
Bangladesh Passengers’ Welfare Association unfolded the report in a press meeting at the Dhaka Reporter’s Unity auditorium on Friday.
A monitoring cell on road accident of the organization made the report.
“The accidents took place in 13 days between Aug 16 and Aug 28. Among the victims, 12 members of the law enforcers were included”, said Secretary General of the organization Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury.Death toll of the Eid-ul-Azha a bit lower than the period of Eid-ul-Fitr due to some protective measures were taken, read the report.
However, accidents and wounded victims are slightly higher in terms of number than in the same period last year, it also included.
Bus accidents were identified as the reason for most of the deaths in the survey during the period.
During the media call, the passengers’ welfare platform included some reasons of the road crashes such as: number of vehicles on the roads without fitness, reckless driving, inexpert drivers, three-wheelers on the highways, lacking in adequate footpaths and bad state of roads.
