Rohingya refugees arrive to the Bangladeshi side of the Naf River after crossing the border from Myanmar, in Palang Khali, Bangladesh, October 16, 2017. REUTERSUN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has come down heavily on Myanmar for committing crimes against Rohingya and urged the Security Council to take a unified position to resolve the problem.

“This crisis cannot continue indefinitely,” he said at the UNSC meeting on Situation in Myanmar held in New York today.

The meeting started Wednesday 1am and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Cate Blanchett and Bangladesh Permanent Representative Masud bin Momen are expected to deliver their statement.

The Secretary General said as long Myanmar as does not create conducive environment in Rakhine, there would be no voluntary, safe and dignified repatriation possible.

He lamented that Myanmar authorities do not allow access to UN agencies in Rakhine state.

About his Bangladesh visit last month, he said, I cannot forget the horrific stories I heard from Rohingyas.

About the report of Fact Finding Mission submitted this week, he said it would be duly considered by the UN agencies.

Praising Bangladesh, he said the international community should come forward to help the Rohingyas as there is a shortage of fund to help them.

Meanwhile, the UN fact finding mission report released Monday said the constitutional powers of the civilian authorities afford little scope for controlling the actions of the Tatmadaw. Nor is there any indication that they directly participated in planning or implementing security operations or were part of the command structure.

Nevertheless, nothing indicates that civilian authorities used their limited powers to influence the situation in Rakhine State where crimes were being perpetrated.

State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has not used her de facto position as head of government, nor her moral authority, to stem or prevent the unfolding events, or seek alternative avenues to meet a responsibility to protect the civilian population.
