Bangladesh will be able to bring back the fugitive Bangabandhu killer from the US, says Law Minister Anisul Haq citing ‘very friendly relations’ with the country.
Speaking at a discussion on Saturday, he said, “The US deported one of the convicts in 2007. But between 2001 and 2006, the Bangladesh government had not taken any initiatives to bring the killers back. But the US is in talks with us to chalk out a legal way to return the fugitive.”
Fugitive Rashed Chowdhury is now staying in the US after securing political asylum.
In 2007, convict Mohiudin Ahmed was deported by the US after his asylum appeal was rejected.
Law Minister Haq said on Saturday that he was confident of bringing back Rashed Chowdhury.
However, the case of another death-row convict Noor Chowdhury in Canada is complex, he said.
“We have good relations with Canada... the country has scrapped death penalty and its laws also bar deporting any foreign national who might face the death penalty in home country. We have opened legal battle as well as continuing talks,” said Haq.
He, however, declined to provide updates on the other fugitive convicts “as the killers may get the wind of it and change locations”.
