13 years of series blasts: challenge for law enforcement to neo-militancy

This is the 13th years on after a series of bomb explosions jolted the country: hundreds of locations in 63 out of the 64 districts were targeted in quick succession.
Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), a banned militant outfit, then, turned the spotlight on them by detonating the bombs, declared their fresh emergence on Aug 17, 2005.
In recent years, JMB has executed number target killings across the country. The terrorist group is nowadays snatching and doing robberies to fetch money to run the organization.
Even the members of JMB formed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen of India (JMI) to get a global recognition and it is seen to have claimed the responsibilities of attacks through online as well.
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), a special wing of Dhaka Metropolitan Police battling against the expansion of militancy for years, officials claimed that the JMB has lost its ability to reform again.
Due to the relentless anti-militancy crackdown of the law enforcers, the militant unit lost its financial channels and supply of explosives, the CTTC officials said.
According to the police headquarters, a total of 159 cases were filed so far over the chain blasts on Aug 17. Police submitted 149 charge sheets accusing 1, 106 persons.
Final report has been placed in 10 cases. Till the date, eight militants were executed.
Court announced death sentences to 27 convicts and total 334 were jailed in different terms.
CTTC’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Sanwar Hossain has been a part of the anti-militancy operation for long.
He stressed that the JMB was never remaining inoperative; they carried on membership drives silently.
Noor Khan Liton, a human rights activist who has been vigilant over the issues closely, said, “Only forcing will not be enough to curb militancy.”

Official of Counter Terrorism Unit Abdul Mannan said: “To win over radicalization, we have to imbue with our national ethics, cultural and liberation war spirit.”

Radicalization must be stopped to be triumphant in the war, he added.
