Delhi has given a reaction to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s comment on the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
After the CAA was passed in the Indian parliament on Dec 11, the country has been rocked by intense protests and agitation with an uneasy relation created with neighbouring Bangladesh.
After a comment by Indian home minister Amit Shah, three ministers from Bangladesh, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and State Minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam, cancelled their scheduled trips to India.
Last week, in an interview given to Gulf News, Sheikh Hasina, said: “I do not know why India introduced the CAA; it was not necessary.”On Thursday, at a briefing of the foreign ministry, Raveesh Kumar observed: “We have explained our position about the necessity of the CAA to the Bangladesh government and we would like to draw your attention to the statement of PM Sheikh Hasina where she said that the relation between India and Bangladesh is going through the best period. In many other statement in Bangladesh, the CAA has been mentioned as an internal matter for India.”
It became quite clear that PM Sheikh Hasina’s candid comment to the Gulf News put India in an awkward situation and, therefore, Delhi is trying to allay fears in Dhaka.
