Days after PM Narendra Modi said that there are no talks of bringing NRC across India, Amit Shah on Tuesday (Dec 24) said there is no discussion on nationwide NRC now.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah also said that there was no link between the National Population Register (NPR) exercise and the National Register of Citizen (NRC), reports Indian media agency ANI.
In an exclusive interview with ANI Editor Smita Prakash, Shah said that that information obtained through NPR cannot be used for NRC which was a separate process.
Shah's remarks came on a day the union cabinet approved the proposal for conducting Census of India 2021 and updating of NPR.
Thousands of Indians have taken to the streets to protest the new law, as well as plans for a National Register of Citizens (NRC), with at least 21 people killed in clashes with police in the biggest challenge to Modi's leadership since 2014.
