India says it has arrested 1,154 immigrants who illegally crossed Bangladesh border to enter the country till Oct 31 this year, reports local media.
"1,154 illegal migrants arrested by security forces at India-Bangladesh border till 31st October," The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs said in a written reply to the upper house Rajya Sabha on Wednesday (Dec 4), according to ANI.
The revelation was made hours after India’s cabinet cleared a citizenship amendment bill that seeks to provide citizenship to non-Muslims from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh if they faced persecution in their countries.
The contentious bill is set to be tabled in Parliament next week, according to ANI.
