Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of the state of West Bengal, speaks during `United India` rally attended by the leaders of India`s main opposition parties ahead of the general election, in Kolkata, India, January 19, 2019. REUTERSThe ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India has accused Mamata Banarjee, the chief minister of West Bengal and the Trinamool Congress leader, of trying to make her province into ‘another Bangladesh’. The BJP have also composed a parody song asking Mamata to go to Bangladesh.
BJP supporters accuse Mamata of trying to come back to power by appeasing the Muslim minority in West Bengal. Consequently, BJP members of different levels are threatening Mamata with the line: “this is West Bengal; do not try to make it into a second Bangladesh.”
The parody song ridicules Mamata’s close affinity with the Muslim community and shows the leader joining in prayers with Muslims in West Bengal.

Trinamool leaders allege that BJP is trying to add a sectarian dimension to the electoral campaigns.

The parody song also includes footage of a protest in front of Dhaka University.

BJP candidate from Raiganj, Deboshree Choudhary, told Bangla Tribune, “Mamata is playing the Bangladesh and Muslim card to polarize Muslim votes in the state.”
Veteran political analyst of West Bengal, Shibaji Basu Roy, says that if Trinamool gets almost all 27 percent of Muslim votes in West Bengal then with a small number of votes from the Hindu community, she can easily emerge victorious.
The paradox is that Mamata is being slated as being Bangladeshi while she is not popular in Bangladesh for her opposition to the Teesta water sharing proposal.
