Labour Party’s John Biggs has won a second term as mayor of Bangladeshi dominated Tower Hamlets. Rabina Khan from the People’s Alliance of Tower Hamlet (PATH) was his nearest challenger in the election. The election result was published on May 4.
UK-based Daily Mirror reports that John Biggs was elected by 37,619 votes where his nearest challenger got 13,113 votes.
The report says, 41.96 per cent voters turned out at polling booths this year to cast their franchises.
Apart from Khan, two more Bangladeshi-British candidates were in the race—Abul Monsur Ohid Ahmed from Aspire party and Anwara Ali from Conservative Party.
Backed by former mayor Lutfur Rahman, Ohid secured 11,109 votes while Ali 6,149 votes.
According to unconfirmed reports, several other Bangladeshi-British candidates have been elected as councilors across England.
From Brent Council, renowned community leader Parvez Ahmed has been re-elected as a councillor. Barrister Mohammad Khaled Noor has been elected for the first time from Barking and Dagenham council.
Rita Begum and Nazma Begum from Camden Council, Sadruzzaman from Barking council, Faruk Chowdhury and Syed Firoz Ghani from Barking and Dagenham Council and Foyzur Rahman Have been elected in this year’s election.
Councilor Junab Ali has been re-elected for the fifth term from the Swindon Council. He is scheduled to take office as the first Asian mayor on May 18. Abdul Momin was elected as councillor from Swindon. Sherwan Choudhury has been re-elected from the Croydon Council. Journalist Syeda Saima also elected from the Barking Council.
