British Bangladeshi, Rabina Khan, has dissolved her party, People’s Alliance of Tower Hamlets, and has joined the mainstream Liberal Democrat (Libdem) Party.
Fifty senior members of her previous party followed her and also joined the Libdems.
A press conference was organized to declare the change of colours on 29 August last in East London.
A written statement at the press conference stated that People’s Alliance and Liberal Democrats had been working for a long period to tackle Brexit related situation, prevent politics of division and, to improve facilities provided by the local government.
The newly joined leaders expressed their determination to consolidate Libdems in Tower Hamlets. Leaders also criticized various decisions of the current Tower Hamlets mayor.
Rabina started her political career with Labour and joined the group of former Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman. When Lutfur Rahman was removed from the post of Mayor, Rabina took part in the mayoral election with his support. However, in the last election, Lutfur supported councillor, Ohid Ahmed, instead of Rabina, which led Ms. Khan to form her own party.
Surprising all, she bagged the second highest votes in the polls.
