Top British lawyer Alexander Charles Carlile, Baron Carlile of Berriew, was appointed as a counsel for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday.
In response to a query of Bangla Tribune, Baron Carlile of Berriew wrote in an email: “I have been appointed as one of the counsel for Begum Khalida Zia. I shall be advising upon the compliance of the proceedings against her with international rule of law and standards, and upon general criminal law aspects.
You might like to note that I was recently appointed as the Chairman of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative UK (CHRI), which is taking a close interest in issues of judicial independence and separation of powers in Bangladesh. These are close interests of mine.”Earlier on Tuesday morning, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that Baron Carlile will be advising Khaleda’s defense lawyers.
