Several generations in this country have grown up devouring the thrilling adventures of Bangladeshi super spy, Masud Rana or MR9.
Though books are still being published, Rana has not been represented on the big screen that much.
In 1974, noted film actor and producer, Masud Parvez, known on screen as Sohel Rana, made and acted as the hero in the first film based on the book Bisshoron.
In the last 44 years, no other film was made since the writer Qazi Anwar Hussain did not give the permission to anyone.
However, the latest news is that Rana is now coming on the big screen with three back to back films.
These are coming under Jazz Multimedia, said renowned film producer Abdul Aziz.
The process to select the hero is underway and the books chosen for the plots are: Dhongsho Pahar, Bharat Natyam and Shornomrigo.
“It’s difficult to choose the protagonist since he will portray Rana in all the three movies,” said Aziz.
Responding to a question as to why he decided to make Masud Rana for the big screen, the successful producer said: in Bangladesh, we do not have any super hero of our own; the only hero everyone knows is Masud Rana and that’s why I felt the desire to immortalize the character in a new age manifestation.”
The film maker also said that for 44 years, the creator of Rana, the illustrious writer, Qazi Anwar Hussain, refused to hand over Masud Rana’s film making rights to anyone, fearing that with the wrong portrayal, the character’s mystique would be lost.
However, that’s changed since the writer feels Jazz Multimedia would be able to present Rana as we have read in the books.
Meanwhile, Unilever Bangladesh has associated with the project of making three Masud Rana movies.
Shooting for the first is due to start from January 2019. Currently, work is underway to make the script and search locations for the film’s shooting.
