Police in Bogura attacked for stopping religious gathering

825Two policemen in Bogura were beaten for trying to stop a religious gathering being held despite the government bad amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The incident was reported from the district’s Sultanganjpar on Wednesday (Mar 26) night, confirmed Sadar police OC SM Badiuzzaman.

The gathering was arranged on the occasion of the death anniversary of Sirajul Haque Chisti, a local religious leader.

His devotees gathered at his shrine on Wednesday despite the police warning them twice.

Around 9:30 pm Upashohor police outpost In-Charge Nannu Khan and Assistant Superintendent Inspector Jahidul Islam went to the spot to break up the gathering when the devotees confined them in a room and beat them up.

Bogura Sadar Circle Additional Superintendant of police Sanatan Chakraborty led a police team to the scene where the devotees attacked them again.

The police then broke through several doors and arrested several people including the organizer Rahul Gazi and former upazila councilor Nurul Amin Noor.
