Representational image REUTERS/file photoThe government has partially reduced the bandwidth capacities of Grameenphone (GP) and Robi as the two mobile operators did not pay its due amount to the government detected in audits.
On Thursday (Jul 4), the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BRTC) instructed the country’s five International Internet Gateways (IIGs) to limit GP’s bandwidth capacity at 144gbps (gigabits per second) and Robi’s at 125gbps.
IIGs officials confirmed of the BRTC’s order saying they have already started the process to cut bandwidth for the operators.
“The IIGs have been also ordered to not raise their bandwidth capacity until further notice,” said a top official of an IIG, asking not to be named.
Reducing the bandwidth would hamper the services provided by the company causing slow internet and rise in call drops.
Grameenphone has Tk 125.8 billion as due and Robi, on the other hand, needs to pay the government Tk 8.67 billion.
Of the total amount, Grameenphone owes Tk 8.494 billion to BTRC and Tk 40.86 billion to National Board of Revenue.
