Internet users in Bangladesh soared by 600,000 to reach 93.7 million in April, according to the latest figures by telecoms regulator.
Mobile phone-based connection has contributed the highest with 87.9 million users to the tally followed by WiMAX 60,000 users while ISP and PSTN have occupied 5.73 million users, says the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Industry insiders say trend of internet penetration fell drastically in November and December last year, but the first month, January of this year took a u-turn and has continued upward growth, reports BSS.
They attributed the mobile number portability (MNP) initially which was launched in October last for that down trend, as mobile phone users who have been holding multiple SIMs reached a decision of fixing the number of connections.
Moreover, the telecom regulator had imposed restriction on mobile phone operators regarding the number and duration of internet packages which also contributed partially to the sluggish internet growth.
Internet users declined to 91.8 million and 91.3 million respectively in November and December.
In April, almost most of the users connected with the internet were mobile phone-based along with a nominal ISP and PSTN users. But, the WiMAX users continued its declining trend and it stood at 60,000 which was 61,000 in previous month.
