Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has instructed mobile phone operators to shut 3G and 4G services from Saturday (Dec 29) noon until Sunday (Dec 30) midnight.

A top official of a telecom operator told Bangla Tribune that they received the BTRC directive on Saturday.

“We initiated the process of shutting down 3G and 4G services upon receiving the directive,” he said on condition of anonymity.

Once the operators implement the telecom regulator’s directive, internet services will be limited to low-speed 2G services.

Users will be able to comfortably send and receive text messages, however, they will not enjoy exchanging bigger files like high quality images or videos.

Broadband services will remain normal as the regulatory authority issues no instructions to the internet service providers.

“We receive no instructions yet,” said Internet Service Providers Association Bangladesh General Secretary Imdadul Haque.

Haque claimed if broadband service is suspended businesses and offices will be affected mostly.

“We think broadband services won’t affect the government’s activities,” Haque said.

On Wednesday (Dec 26), the BTRC told the International Internet Gateway representatives that social media sites, especially Facebook, may be blocked.

On Thursday (Dec 27) the BTRC shut down 3G and 4G services, which was restored after 10 hours on Friday (Dec 28) morning.

Back in August this year, the BTRC slowed down internet speed for almost 24 hours during the students’ campaign for safer roads.
