Mobile phone users will be able to switch operators while keeping their existing number unchanged from midnight Monday.
The much-awaited mobile number portability (MNP) service is finally being introduced following a directive from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Speaking about the service, BTRC Chairman Jahurul Haque said, “Operators will have to compete in terms of providing quality customer services to stay relevant. Users will experience total freedom in choosing their operator.”
He also mentioned that the users will have to pay a small amount to avail the MNP service.
Users who want to change their operator will need to get a new SIM card from their preferred operator for the cost of Tk 50 plus tax and SIM replacement fee.
The new SIM card will take 72 hours to be active, however, users can get it active within 24 hours by paying emergency fee.
Customers must wait 90 days if they want to switch operators again.
