Shahadat Hossain, a fast bowler currently out of favour with the Bangladesh national team, is on the verge of receiving a one-year ban for abusing a teammate during a first-class match.
This is at least the second time that the 33-year old Shahadat is facing the consequences of letting his anger rule, as he had hit the headlines for abusing his domestic help a couple of years ago.
Shahdat, who played his 38th and last Test for Bangladesh in 2015, physically assaulted his Dhaka Division teammate Arafat Sunny Junior during the second day of their National League Cricket encounter at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium on Sunday (Nov 17).
It is reported that the altercation took place after Shahdat had asked the 24-year old Arafat Sunny to shine the ball. When the debutant declined to do so, the pacer assaulted him physically during the lunch break. Match referee Akhtar Ahmed acknowledged the fact.
One of the officials of the tournament committee has informed that Shahadat was withdrawn from the game and is charged with a level-4 breach of the code of conduct. If the player is proven guilty by the Bangladesh Cricket Board technical committee, he will face a one-year ban and a fine of Tk50,000.
Shahadat has confessed to the assault, saying that he lost his temper not only because Sunny declined to shine the ball, but also because the 24-year-old had replied harshly.
