The Jubo Dal has veered away from the ideals on which it was formed and on its 43rd founding anniversary, former leaders blame the current committee for the debacle.
In the last three years, the party could not launch any major programme, they complained.
The BNP was established on Oct 27, 1978, by former president Ziaur Rahman to uphold values and goals such as productive politics, the establishment of a just society based on free economy and democracy, pro-people economic development and development of a skill and ideal based youth leadership.
General secretary of Jubo Dal, Sultan Salauddin Tuku, said: “We are living in an adverse atmosphere; I was in jail for 13 months after forming the committee; one can work for the benefit of society when there is a normal condition prevailing in the country but the government has become Fascist, depriving the masses of their fundamental rights.”
The main aim of Jubo Dal was to free BNP chief Khaleda Zia and oust the illegal government, he added.
Senior joint general secretary of the party, Nurul Islam Nayan, observed: “You know the condition of the country in the last decade; if BNP had been in power, we could have engaged in social welfare programmes but since the party is not in power, we do not have the chance.”
On Oct 9 last, BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, had Skype meetings with Jubo Dal leaders and told them to form a committee by Oct 20. But that did not happen.
However, Tuku said that Tarique Rahman did not specify any date within which the committee has to be formed.
“We will soon form a committee, he added while others allege that while serving as Chhatra Dal president, Tuku, created his own circle and is the main impediment to the formation of a full-fledged committee.”
BNP’s standing committee member, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, observed: “In the current state of the political environment, no opposition party will be able to show any constructive results; workers cannot do anything in the absence of rudiments of a democratic system.”
