Relatives, lawyers meet Khaleda

Former PM Khaleda Zia has been sentenced to five years in jail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. BANGLA TRIBUNE/file photo/Nashirul IslamLegal counsels and relatives of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have met her at the prison on Saturday.
Sources in the party confirmed that lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali and Sanaullah Miah went to the old jailhouse on Dhaka’s Nazimuddin Road around 3pm.
Around 4:30am, Khaleda’s sister Selima Islam accompanied by her husband, son and daughter-in-law entered the prison premises.
Following the visit, a relative said that Khaleda Zia’s physical condition was not good as she finds it hard to walk on her own.
On Jul 14, Selima Islam and four others failed to meet her.
“During previous visits, we were allowed to go upstairs to meet her at the passage beside her room. We came today after knowing that she was ill. We had the proper clearance, but she is unable to use the stairs and we are not allowed to upstairs,” Selina Islam told the media then
The three-time prime minister is serving a five-year term after she was convicted of embezzling foreign donations made to the Zia Orphanage Trust.
On Jul 10, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed at a media briefing that Khaleda’s family members were not being allowed to meet her for the last 11 days.
