Jamaat begins process to elect new Amir

After serving nine years as the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, Mokbul Ahmed is going on retirement; last month, he gave a letter to the party executive council, citing health reasons.
Mokbul was acting chief of the party from June2010 to October 2010 and full amir from 2017.
Jamaat has already begun process to elect a new Amir. By Oct 15, three panel amirs will be selected through secret ballot and then, a country wide voting will be held to select an amir.
Nayeb-e-AmirMia Golam Parwar said: “We have elections every three years and the same will be followed this time; the process has begun from October and overall work will be completed by December.”
The new Amir will begin work in January.
Mokbul came to leadership position when top Jamaat leaders were absent for being accused of war crimes.
Mokbul was also accused of opposing independence and the ICT also began investigation against him, though the process is facing witness shortage at the moment.

Regarding Mokbul, political observer and retired bureaucrat Shah Abdul Hannan, said: “Moqbul is an honest man and even after retiring, he will remain as adviser.”
Several sources of Jamaat says that in electing Amir, seniority will be taken into account. At present, the party has five Nayeb-e-Amir: Professor Mujibur Rahman, Abdus Sobhan (in prison), Delwar Hossain Sayedee (sentenced), Mia Golam Parwar and ANM Shamsul Islam.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman is being considered for the top post, said party sources.
Jamaat members feel that Amir will be elected from existing Nayeb-e-Amir and the names Mujibur Rahman and Mia Golam Parwar are being heard.
Central committee member and Sylhet unit Jamaat chief Ehsanul Mahbub Jubayer, says: “Before amir election, panel election will be held and this is done with utmost secrecy.”
