The Jatiya Party will hold a national council on Nov 30 to choose its leadership following the death of its founder HM Ershad.
GM Quader, who had been serving as the acting chairman after the founder’s death, made the announcement on Saturday (Sept 7) at the party’s Banani office.
Party members will elect the chief of Jatiya Party through the council, he added.
It was also suggested that the Jatiya Party candidate for the by-election in Rangpur 3 constituency is yet to be nominated. The candidate will be nominated after assessing the disposition of contenders from other parties.
On Friday, a Jatiya Party faction, loyal to GM Quader, announced him as the chairman of the party.
The party's senior member Kazi Feroz Rashid briefed journalists after holding a joint meeting of the party presidium members, and the lawmakers in presence of the chairman.
Feroz Rashid said those who have declared Raushan Ershad as party chairman have breached the party constitution. He also accused them of spreading confusion among supporters, and its leaders as well.
Prior to this, a faction of Jatiya Party (JaPa) declared its Senior Co-Chairman Raushan Ershad as the chairman of the party on Thursday.
JaPa Presidium Member Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, MP, made the announcement at a media call, blaming GM Quader if splitting the party.
It was also decided that Mashiur Rahman Rangawill remain as the party secretary general.
On Jul 18, four days after the death of Ershad, Ranga declared Quader as the party chairman. On Jul 23, Raushan along with seven MPs and two presidium members gave a statement refusing to accept Quader as the party chief.
