Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attends a doa mahfil at its party office on the occasion of Khaleda Zia's birthday in Naya Paltan in Dhaka on Friday (Aug 16).BNP has not succeeded in waging a movement to have its chairperson Khaleda Zia freed from jail, says the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He made the remark at a doa and milad mahfil organised at BNP’s Naya Paltan central office in Dhaka on the occasion of Khaleda Zia’s 75th birthday being observed by the party on Friday (Aug 16) instead of Aug 15 this year.

Khaleda, who was now serving a jail term in a false case, had returned to the country knowing well the consequences it would have but she had chosen to put her trust in the country’s judiciary system which had no independence of its own anymore, said Mirza Fakhrul.

There was no now alternative to an organised movement to have Khaleda freed from imprisonment, he added.

Claiming that the government had already destroyed the jute industry, Fakhrul said that it was now conspiring to destroy the leather industry and doing everything to make the country dependent on others.
