E-passports coming soon

Existing Machine Readable Passports will be accepted till its stipulated validity date. SAZZAD HOSSAIN/File PhotoHome ministry has issued a notice to fix the fee of electronic passports or e-passports. The necessary papers needed for e-passports won’t have to be attested and there won’t be any need for photos.
Based on passport tenure, distribution type, the lowest fee without VAT is Tk 3,500 and highest 12,000. Currently, the fee for urgent passport with VAT is Tk 3,450 and Tk 6,900 for super urgent.
Once the nod comes from the PM, the inaugural progamme will be attended, informed sources of the home ministry.
Additional secretary of the home ministry, Md Azharul Huq, says: “A notice has been circulated by fixing e-passport fees and the PM will officially inaugurate this service once she is back in the country.”
The passports will be two types with 5 and 10 year tenure. One will have 48 pages and the other 64. There will be three types – general, urgent and super urgent.
For general types with police clearance, the passport will be handed over within 21 working days. For emergency, it will be seven days with police clearance and 72 hours for extra urgent ones.
The passport applicant will have to collect police clearance and submit with the filled forms.
Passport with five years tenure and 48 pages will be Tk 3,500 and Tk 5,000 for 10 years. For 64 pages, the five year one is Tk 5,500 and Tk 7,000 for a ten year one.
The application can be filled online and attestation of papers won’t be needed.
Applicants below 18 must mention NID numbers of parents and birth certificate will be required.
If an applicant is above 18, NID number will be needed.
If application is made at a foreign mission then the address in Bangladesh has to be mentioned as permanent address. Diplomatic passport applications will have to be submitted to the Consular and Welfare Wing of the foreign ministry or at the head office of the Department of Immigration and Passports.
For children of government officials, who are below 15, passports can be obtained under emergency with the fees of the general one.
For renewal, the applicant does not have to be present unless there is a need to change photo or add updated information.
In Bangladesh, super urgent passports will be renewed within 48 hours, emergency in 72 hours. If someone dies then his/her passport has to be submitted at the nearest passport office or Bangladesh mission for cancellation.
After cancellation, the passport may be returned based on a request to the relatives/heirs.
