Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud was addressing a discussion, arranged by Bangladesh Swadhinata Parishad, at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium in Dhaka on Friday (Jul 19).The caretaker government of 2007 had arrested Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina to stop the progress of democracy in the country, said Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud.
“She (Hasina) was arrested to resist the voice of people. By arresting her, the country’s democracy was confined,” he said while addressing a discussion, arranged by Bangladesh Swadhinata Parishad, at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium in Dhaka on Friday (Jul 19).
“The then caretaker government talked about establishing justice and a corruption-free nation, but it did not arrest those who made the country a safe haven of militancy and corruption. Instead, they arrested Sheikh Hasina,” he added.
“Once BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had said the AL government could not build the Padma Bridge, but the bridge is now visible,” said Hasan.
Criticising the recent remarks of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the AL publicity and publication secretary said “You should not forget that the World Bank had cancelled financing from five projects on graft allegations during BNP regime…we welcome constructive criticism. But do not like blind criticism,” he added.
