The BNP, which boycotted the 2014 election, took part in the 2018 national election under the Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikya Front coalition. FILE PHOTOA search committee, comprising BNP leaders could not find a solution to the crisis over the formation of the next Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal committee after talks with ousted leaders of the dissolved Chhatra Dal committee.

On Tuesday(Jul 16), the search committee met disgruntled leaders of the former Chhatra Dal committee. The meeting ran from 5:30 pm till 10pm but the five hour meet ended without any solution. BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman formed the search committee last April to define Chhatra Dal’s future leadership.

But the search committee could not find an agreeable solution. Instead, the aggrieved leaders asked why the previous Chhatra Dal committee was dissolved the day before Eid.

At the meet, search committee leaders said that since Khaleda Zia is in prison and the acting chairman in London, members of the party have to work with devotion and love.

In response the indignant members of Chhatra Dal said that though they had worked hard they were ousted.

Joint general secretary of the dissolved committee, Golam Azam Saikat, says: “the expulsion order has to be withdrawn and a convener committee formed till Jan 1 next.”

The irate former Chhatra Dal leaders asked the search committee what they had done to secure the release of Khaleda Zia.

Joint secretary general of BNP, Khairul Kabir Khokon, said: “we have heard their demands; we will now raise the matter to the acting chairman.”

The contribution of the former Chhatra Dal committee members will be taken into account; some of them have endured time in prison for the party and harassment from all quarters, he added.

On Jun 3, the previous committee was dissolved and BNP began work to form a new committee. Since then, the leaders of the dissolved committee have been protesting in front of BNP’s Naya Paltan office.
