The deals inked between Bangladesh and China during the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pave the way for more corruption, says the BNP.
“We would have been very glad if the prime minister had discussed ways to resolve the Rohingya crisis with the Chinese president. Instated, she signed deals on mega projects that are, in fact, the deals of mega corruption,” Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Thursday (Jul 4).
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh signed nine instruments following Hasina’s talks with her Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang at the Great Hall of People in Beijing.
The nine instruments — five agreements, three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and a document — cover different sectors ranging from aid for the Rohingyas and economic and technical cooperation, investment, power, culture, and tourism.
Speaking at an event organised by a BNP affiliate organisation in Dhaka, Mirza Fakhrul claimed that people of Bangladesh would reject the agreements.
Expressing disappointed at the verdict on the over the 1994 attack on a train carrying the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina, the senior BNP leader said, “The verdict in Pabna surprises the nation... We (BNP) are not only disappointed but also aggrieved at it.”
On Wednesday (Jun 3), a court in Pabna sentenced nine people to death and 25 others to life in prison in the case filed for attacking Hasina.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “Two shots were fired at the attack 24 years ago. There was no evidence on who fired the shots or how many bullets were fired. But, nine people have been given death penalty over the attack.”
“BNP leaders have been convicted in the cases. But, the attack was a result of infighting between two factions of Awami League,” he alleged.
Speaking of bail to jailed BNP chairperson, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Everyone gets bail except Khaleda Zia.”
