This June 2018 photo shows Awami League’s emblem and party symbol engraved on the front side of the new Awami League`s central office at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka Gulistan. CourtesyThe decision to punish rebel candidates who stood against Awami League (AL) nominated candidates for the Upazila Council polls has not been carried out as yet.
AL leaders say that this will be time consuming and some are working on it and the process will begin now as the final phase of the voting was over on Tuesday (Jun 18).
It’s believed that some minister and MPs backed renegade candidates of their preference during the election. Many ministers, MPs and local leaders forced voters to cast their votes for rogue candidates which resulted in the debacle of the genuine AL nominees.
Consequently, at an executive council meet, held on Apr 5, decision was taken to adopt measures against rebels.
Presidium Abdur Razzak said: “Work is underway to make a list of those who opposed party candidates. When all phases of the election are over, declaration will be made to punish the disobedient.”
Reportedly, thousands of complaints have been submitted and these are being assessed.
On Jun 18 in Madaripur, district unit General Secretary Kamal Krishna De got party nomination but was challenged by Obaidur Rahman Khan, who is the brother of former shipping minister and local MP Shajahan Khan.
Reportedly, Khan took the side of his brother. The same is believed to have happened in Gazipur and Rangpur. An MP in Rangpur is said to have tried to disrupt the election when it became clear that the rebel candidate was heading for a defeat.
