A member of BNP’s policymaking forum has admitted that the party is in a dilemma over its student affiliate, Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal (JCD).
BNP is “in a dilemma” over tackling JCD’s ongoing demonstration for a new committee as well as the formation of the student body’s new leadership, senior leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy told the media at his office in the capital’s Nayapaltan on Wednesday (Jun 12).
Citing no political party can function without a democratic environment, Roy said, JCD lost its tradition of movement as it did in the past.
Roy, a member of BNP’s National Standing Committee, alleged that JCD leaders and activists can’t go to their respective campuses over the past 12 years.
“JCD can no longer with the students,” he said.
Speaking of JCD’s demonstration, Roy said they would listen to student leaders and try to solve it.
“We will speak to them (JCD leaders) and solve the matter” he said.
On Tuesday (Jun 11), former JCD leaders and activists locked the main gate of BNP’s Nayapaltan office protesting against the newly-imposed age limits for its members.
On June 3, at the order of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, a press release from BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi disbanded JCD’s previous central committee of.
The release also stated that to be included in a Chhatra Dal committee, candidates must be a student of an educational institution in Bangladesh, and they must have passed their SSC or equivalent exams after the year 2000.
From that day, a large portion of senior leaders became indignant.
The former leaders and activists were demanding that a short-term committee be formed to hold office till January 1 next year and that consecutive committees follow this system on a yearly basis, without there being an age limit for membership.
