BNP has slammed the government for creating confusion over the sighting of the moon and said it happened for the lack of good governance.
"What happen yesterday (over moon sighting) is, I think, an outcome of the lack of good governance in the country," said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday (Jun 5).
Talking to reporters after paying homage to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, the senior BNP leader said, "They (government) first announced by 8:30pm that the moon was not sighted and Eid will be celebrated on Thursday (Jun 6).
"Later, the state minister for religion came up with amended announcement around 11pm saying the moon had been sighted."
“Two different announcements over the Eid confused people,” Fakhrul alleged.
"People need preparation for Eid and its prayers but the government is least bothered about people's necessity and their sufferings. I think such incidents are happening the for lack of good governance in the country."
Fakhrul also alleged that there is no joy of Eid in the houses of hundreds of thousands of people because thousands of democratic leaders and activists are on the run facing false cases. They could not go to their homes even on this Eid day.
He also said the country's farmers cannot celebrate the Eid and festivity as they could not sell their paddy at fair prices. "So there is no joy in their houses as well."
The BNP leader claimed many holidaymakers were killed and injured in road accidents on their way home while many others could not go to their native places.
Fakhrul said their party leaders and activists are also passing their Eid with heavy hearts as Chairperson Khaleda Zia is still in jail.
He also said that though BNP's senior leaders sought permission from the jail authorities to meet Khaleda on Eid day, they were not allowed to do so.
Khaleda Zia was sent to jail on Feb 8, 2018, after being found guilty of corruption in two cases.
She has been receiving treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for several physical problems since April, 2018.
He said the jail authority only gave permission to seven family members to meet Khelada Zia.
The BNP leaders alleged that the authorities have violated the jail code by not allowing BNP's senior leaders to meet their Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Fakhrul, along with party senior leaders, went to Zia's grave around 11am and placed wreaths.
