BNP to pick Siraj for Bogura by-polls

GM Siraj serves as convener of the BNP’s Bogura district unit. FILE PHOTOThe BNP has decided to float GM Siraj as it candidate for the by-polls to the Bogura-6 parliamentary seat, which was vacated as its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir refused to take oath to his office.
According to party insiders, the formal announcement will be made on Tuesday (May 28).
A member of its policymaking National Standing Committee confirmed Bangla Tribune that Siraj has been picked as the candidate.
“There are three back-up candidates in case his nomination is scrapped,” he told on condition of anonymity.
Speaking to Bangla Tribune on Siraj, who serves as convener of the BNP’s Bogura district unit, said, “I am fully prepared, but it’s up to the party who will contest the election.”
He said that the election officials have cleared his nomination on Monday (May 27).
Meanwhile, the ruling Awami League has floated SMT Zaman Niketa as its candidate for the elections slated for Jun 24.
Jatiya Party has picked its district unit’s General Secretary Md Nurul Islam Omar for the race.
