Three days after the full-fledged committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was announced, it has been alleged that one-third members of the 301-strong panel are ‘controversial’.
On Thursday (May 16), the BCL leaders, who have been demonstrating as they were ‘deprived’ of post, unveiled the name of 99 ‘controversial’ members of the new central committee before the media at Madhur Canteen in Dhaka University.
Announced on Monday (May 13), the BCL’s committee consisted of 61 vice-presidents, 11 joint general secretaries, 11 organizing secretary in addition to other secretaries, assistant secretaries, and deputy secretaries.
Formation of a full-fledge committee came a year after BCL held national council from May 2018 without electing new leadership.
Later in Jul 2018, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina nominated Shovon as president and Golam Rabbani as general secretary of the committee.
The May 13’s announcement sparked protest among many BCL leaders as many were either “deprived” of post of did not get their “desired” one.
Protesters even also came under attack on DU campus on Monday.
Following the demonstration, BCL president and general secretary unveiled the names of 17 ‘controversial’ leaders who somehow managed to get a post in the new committee.
Protesters then said the media unveiling by the top BCL leadership proved their demonstration ‘logical’.
Speaking at Thursday’s press briefing, Shahed Khan, one of the protesters, thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as she instructed the BCL top leadership to quickly act on to omit the controversial leaders from the committee.
Khan, who is the general secretary of the DU’s Kabi Jasimuddin Hall BCL unit, urged the top leaders to take action against the people responsible for Monday’s attack.
Some of leaders, who attended the press briefing, blamed the top BCL leadership for Monday’s attack.
It is evident BCL president and general secretary backed Monday’s attack as no one from the panel formed to prove incident is yet to contact us, they alleged.
