Following Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s conviction for graft, the BNP is now run by a “joint leadership”, says its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
His remarks came on Monday (Apr 22) while addressing an event of former and current leaders of the party’s student affiliate at the National Press Club.
“We have formed a joint leadership within the party after our leader Khaleda Zia was jailed. It’s under that joint leadership, the party is reaching out to the people to restore democracy in Bangladesh,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
His statements seemed to be an apparent effort to assure party activists that there was no crisis within senior BNP leaders.
Urging party workers to wage a mass movement, Mirza Fakhrul said that it was the only option to free Khaleda from jail and restore democracy.
“The crisis of the time now is a well-planned conspiracy to uproot democracy from Bangladesh. Plots are on to remove leaders who had established democracy from the political landscape,” claimed the senior BNP leader.
Blaming the government of establishing a one-party rule, he said, “Look how the state apparatuses are being used for it. The judiciary, administration even the media is not being spared.”
