BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir speaking at a program on Tuesday (Apr 16) at the National Press Club. The recent buzz circulating in the media that BNP chief Khaleda Zia might be getting out on parole is absolutely baseless, claims the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“I want to clearly state that she hasn’t taken any decision about parole,” he said on Tuesday (Apr 16) at the National Press Club.
“The newspapers have been discussing it for quite a few days now. An English national even came up with specific dates in its report today,” he added.
Fakhrul was referring to a Daily Star report on Tuesday that claimed that the BNP and the government had reached an “understanding” that Khaleda will be released on parole and in exchange, the party’s six MP-elects would be taking oath.
The report, quoting an anonymous leader, claimed that the former premier would be flown in to the United Kingdom any day before Apr 30, the last day to be sworn in as lawmakers.
“A group of the ruling party is controlling the media,” the BNP leader alleged.
He said that they were purposefully creating an atmosphere of fear so that popular speakers refrain from taking part in the talk shows.
“It’s becoming increasingly difficult for the people to receive the truth because a lot of those who work in the media have lost their jobs after the national polls.”
On the murder of madrasa student Nusrat and the gang-rape at Shubarnachar, Fakhrul said that these incidents are political in nature.
“The law enforcers have gone against the people. The country is in chaos and there is no accountability,” he said.
