Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad has removed his brother GM Quader from the post of party co-chairman saying that he has failed to carry out his duties and created divisions within the party.
“I had hoped that Golam Mohammad Quader would carry out all the responsibilities of running the party in my absence,” read a media statement signed by Ershad on Friday (Mar 22).
“I had hoped to elect him chairman in the next national council. But keeping the party’s interest in mind I recall my earlier decision,” the statement read.
In the statement, the former military dictator, well known in the political arena for being unpredictable, said that Quader had created divisions within the party and the senior leaders had been unable to work with him.
Quader will still be a member of the party’s Presidium but whether he would still be the deputy leader of Opposition in the Parliament will be decided by JP’s Parliamentary party.
Meanwhile, QM Quader said that he didn’t see such a decision coming.
“This decision is a bit mysterious. I spoke to Ershad yesterday for a long time and he told me to take proper care of the party,” he told Bangla Tribune.
It seems as though Quader isn’t the only one who was taken aback by Ershad’s sudden call. Several party leaders, who despite having reservations about Quader, were surprised by the decision.
